Evelyn Entertaining

Posted by Webby at March 25, 2010 10:29 AM | Comments (0)

A few weeks ago, Jilly told Evelyn that she could invite her friend Molly over for dinner tonight. Of course, Jilly and I have been using the occasion as a 'lever' whenever we've had to remind Evelyn about behaving well at home and at school.

The big day has arrived, and Evelyn has been behaving very well (up to now), so she has gone to school, this morning, happy in the knowledge that Molly will be able to come for tea.

I've just received the following e-mail from Jilly. I laughed out loud (at my desk at work) as I read it!

"Evie was v excited this morning about Molly coming for tea...she said to Molly,

'We must be on our best behaviour at all times today Moll, or else!'

I was laffing in my head! xx"

Of course, further updates may be necessary when Jilly collects Evie from school this afternoon!

RIP Fish #1

I got back from the gym tonight, to discover that Evelyn has had some rather sad news.

Jilly and Evelyn cleaned out the fish over the weekend, when Jilly noticed that one of the fish was a little 'wobbly' in the water and seemed to be having difficulty swimming. Taking Evelyn to bed this evening, Jilly discovered this same fish floating on the surface of the tank. It was dead. As the adults in the family, Jilly and I consider it an absolute bloomin' miracle that any of the fish are still alive given that Evelyn has had the fish for over two years now.

Jilly explained that she was going to have to flush the ex-fish down the toilet, and that Evelyn was to say 'goodbye' to it.

"Oh, but it will get eaten by a shark now!", Evelyn exclaimed, and burst into tears. As we all learn as children, anything flushed down the toilet goes straight out to the sea!

Jilly explained that, when animals die, they're often eaten by other animals.

"Yes", Evelyn replied, sobbing. "Just like that mince we had for tea".

ROAR! SEWERAGE!

She's such a funny onion (no, I really can't remember why or when we began referring to Evie as a humourous vegetable!)

Yesterday morning, Evelyn and I were watching ROAR! on Children's BBC before going to school. The presenters were in the giraffe enclosure, discussing how it was possible to tell the sex of one of the animals from the condition of the hairs on their 'horns'. According to the presenters, the horns on a male giraffe tend to be practically smooth (without hair) due to their fighting. The females, according to the presenters, have more hair on their horns because they don't fight.

"I can see the female giraffes, daddy", Evelyn told me, "they're the ones with the eye shadow".

According to Wikipedia (at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giraffe), "The appearance of horns is a reliable method of identifying the sex of giraffes, with the females displaying tufts of hair on the top of the horns, whereas males' horns tend to be bald on top — an effect of necking in combat". Unfortunately, the same page doesn't contain photographs of giraffes wearing eye shadow!

This morning, Evelyn joined Jilly and I in our room as we were about to get up. She made herself comfortable on our bed, 'sprawling' all over it before finally settling down. Unable to resist her beautiful little tummy in her 'jamas, I leaned over to reach Evelyn and gently pressed the palm of my hand on her tummy, rubbing it.

"Don't do that Daddy, you'll squash out all my sewerage!.

Needless to say, I stopped pressing!

Deb and Kev's 25th Wedding Anniversary Celebrations

Jilly and I were both very pleased when Debbie and Kevin invited us to help them celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in Morecambe and Heysham today.

Having finished work yesterday, Jilly and I left Huddersfield at 17:00, and arrived at The Midland Hotel a little after 18:30. After making our way to our lovely room (a room with a sea view, courtesy of Deb and Kev), Jilly and I dressed for dinner (I'd never worn a DJ before!), before joining Deb and Kev in their penthouse suite. Their suite was beautiful and was complete with fantastic rooftop balcony, with views to the front and rear of the hotel, as well as the sea (though we couldn't see it as it was dark...D'Oh!). With the rest of Deb and Kev's guests, we were treated to an aperitif of canapes and champagne before enjoying an excellent meal in the hotel restaurant.

As the Midland was originally built in the 1930's - in an Art Deco style - Jilly was doubly pleased to have spent the night there, and we were so pleased with our stay that we're now planning to return to celebrate Jilly's next birthday.

This morning, Deb and Kev renewed their marriage vows, in a lovely ceremony, at St. Peter's Church, Heysham. After the ceremony, we all went for a walk along a neighbouring beach before Jilly and I left to come home and collect Evelyn from school.

Once again, many congratulations Deb and Kev. We had a lovely day; thanks ever so much for inviting us to join you.
