Day in Blackpool

Some time ago, Jilly suggested that we might like to take Evelyn to Blackpool to see the lights.

Astonishingly, we made the 70 mile trip to Blackpool in an hour and a quarter door-to-er...car park (I'd forgotten that the M55 goes practically all the way to the centre of Blackpool). Jilly pointed out that the trip was so easy that we could, conceivably, make it every weekend (I told her that I'd consider her suggestion!)

Evie and Jilly enjoying BlackpoolGiven that it is the end of September, the weather was great and Jilly, Evelyn and I had an lovely day walking along the promenade, visiting all three of Blackpool's piers. Evelyn enjoyed many of the rides and games on the piers and, with Jilly's help, won a baby 'Shrek' on the hook-a-duck game. Evelyn even managed to convince Jilly to take her on the big wheel on Central Pier. Unfortunately for Jilly (and exactly as the computer predicted) the wheel stopped with their car at the very top...oh dear!

We enjoyed some excellent fish and chips at the Harry Ramsden restaurant (after queueing outside for almost an hour), before walking along the illuminations. Evelyn seemed quite unimpressed by the lights, though she was a little tired by this time. We caught the tram back to the South Pier before returning to the car and beginning the journey home.

Out of the mouths of babes...

Evelyn crept into our bedroom this morning (just as we were about to get up) and (rather clumsily) climbed into our bed.

"Turn over, Daddy", Evelyn told me, as she collapsed into the bed between Jilly and I, "...your breath smells like a farm!"

Charmin'

But, it doesn't stop there; oh no!

As I was typing this entry, I remembered a comment that Jilly told me Evelyn had made to her very recently. Evelyn has recently shown a lot of interest in wearing 'less-than-suitable' clothing. Evelyn recently insisted on wearing knee-high socks with her school skirt and blouse (in a bizarre Britney Spears stylee) to school. During a VERY heated discussion, Jilly may have told Evelyn that she would look like a 'slut'.

Coming downstairs after getting dressed for an evening out tonight, Jilly asked Evelyn and I our opinions about her outfit.

"Oh, Mummy", Evelyn exclaimed, obviously very impressed by Jilly's outfit, "You look like a lovely slut!"

And...Evelyn and I were watching Mamma Mia! (one of Evelyn's favourite movies) before bed a couple of nights ago. During one particular scene (when the Meryl Streep character sings 'Slipping Through My Fingers' about her daughter on the eve of her wedding), I 'got something in my eye', and may have looked a little like I was upset.

As I held Evie tightly on my lap, my loving daughter looked up to me, and told me,

"Pull yourself together, Daddy".

Perhaps I going to have to create a new Gingatopian category...'BOYS'!

When I collected Evelyn from the after school club today, she rushed to me and gave me a lovely big hug...clearly, something nice had happened to her today!

"Jonah told me that he was going to marry me today", Evelyn told me. "But he only said it because I gave him the jigsaw I won at school"

It's a little early, really, but it seems that Evelyn is already learning unpleasant truths about boys!

(Jonah is a carbon copy of the seventies/early eighties 'Milky Bar Kid'...er...only cute (of course, I'll deny ever saying a word of this if it gets back to Evelyn!)

Evelyn wants a DS...

SHE IS SO BEAUDEEFUL!

Evelyn and I were sat in the living room, last night, watching a little CBBCs (as she'd brought a book home from school which had no words in it?!) when Evie 'showed me her new DS'.

Of course, Evelyn hasn't got a DS, just a little red plastic locking case, in which she keeps a tiny notepad. The case locks using a plastic 'padlock' and key, and Evelyn was pretending to play the DS by pressing the plastic key of her lock onto the faces of the characters she could see on the notepad inside the case. How sweet is that? I'm being daft, aren't I?

And the sweetest thing of all is that she has never actually asked for a DS!

Goodbye Lower Left Central Incisor

Evelyn's second tooth has come out; her lower left central incisor. It's been extremely wobbly for two or three days now and Evelyn was finally conned into allowing Jilly to 'wobble' the tooth. Before Evelyn knew it, Jilly had applied all the pressure she needed , and the tooth was out. Evelyn was soooo brave and immediately asked if she could put it under her pillow for the tooth fairy. That's my girl!

Bingley Music Live 2009

Jilly and I joined Jim, Jobley and Kempy at the Bingley Music festival in Myrtle Park, this weekend. The weekend line-up included 'Doves', 'Zutons' and 'Ocean Colour Scene' on Saturday, and 'The Futureheads', 'Reverend and the Makers', Calvin Harris' and 'The Editors' on Sunday. Unfortunately, my memory of the bands that appeared on Saturday is a little poor, due the astonishing amount of cider Jim made me drink. But I do remember enjoying the 'Zutons', especially after realising that many of them were gingas...I was previously unaware!)

Sunday night's line-up could have been organised in a slightly different order. Calvin Harris had the crowd going crazy, and ought to have headlined (in my opinion), though 'The Editors' and 'Reverend and The Makers' were both great (blimey, though, Jon McClure's a very anger man, isn't he?)

We all agreed what an excellent weekend we'd had, even though we were all knackered at the end of it.

Jim and Jobley discovered the Animoto website which combines music and photo's in a 'top of the pops' stylee; Jim and Jo's Animoto creations may be found using these links!

Back to school...

It was Evelyn's first day back to school today...in YEAR ONE!

Evelyn has been very excited about returning to school, and especially excited that she will be returning to YEAR ONE (rather than reception)...she's growing up!

For some time now, Evelyn has been pestering Jilly and I to let her take packed lunches to school; we've resisted, until now, because we thought she ought to have a more substantial meal than sandwiches during the day. Towards the end of last term, it became apparent to Jilly and I that we really couldn't be sure what (if anything) Evelyn was eating at lunchtime, so we've agreed to letting her take a packed lunch.

"I can't wait to tell Molly I'm having packed lunches!", Evelyn told us as Jilly handed her new Kitty lunch bag.

We arrived at school in plenty of time this morning, and soon found Evelyn's new classroom (despite Evie's 'help') and waited only a few minutes before Molly and her mum arrived. Molly immediately rushed to Evelyn and, as they hugged, Evelyn made her announcement about her new catering arrangements (who could have guessed it was so important to her?)

As Evelyn entered her new classroom, I introduced myself to Evelyn's new (male) teacher, warning him what a monster she can be. He laughed. He thought I was jokng! Evelyn immediately legged it into her new room - excited to be back with her classroom buddies - without giving me a second thought. I loitered for a while, making myself sure she was OK, then knocked on the classroom window to wave goodbye. She'll be fine...
