Father's Day V
Posted by Webby at June 21, 2009 09:45 PM | Comments (0)What a wonderful Father's Day I've had today! I was woken (at a very respectable time) by the beautiful ladies of my life and given a selection of lovely Father's Day gifts.
Evelyn and Jilly had very thoughtfully made me a breakfast fit-for-a-father, of an egg and bacon toasted sandwich with coffee and a glass of orange juice. After my breakfast, Evelyn presented me with my gifts of; a Ped-Egg (I have been complaining about the amount of hard skin on the heels of my feet for some time now), a box of Thornton's Chocolates (that Evelyn seemed particularly reluctant to finally hand over to me), and a very useful reading light (for future camping trips). And...as a special treat, Kieran bought me a bottle of Italian Borolo...excellent!
After breakfast we made our way to Go-Outdoors aka Mitchell's Camping (near Wakefield) where we dreamed of owning the perfect family tent...er...which we failed, even, to find. After leaving the tent shop, we made our way to Nostell Priory where Evie was thrilled to discover the new, improved, adventure playground.
We had a lovely time at Nostell, and Evelyn left there thoroughly exhausted, sleeping most of the way home.
As Jilly put Evelyn to bed tonight, Evelyn snugged up to Jilly as she fell asleep.
"I've had a lovely day Mummy!", Evelyn told Jilly. "Do you think Daddy has had a nice day, too? I think he enjoyed it most in the camp shop!"
Remarkably observant, me daughter. But she wasn't quite right; what I'd enjoyed most was being with my two beaudeeful ladies.
Well done wall
Posted by Webby at June 19, 2009 08:43 PM | Comments (0)Evelyn came home from school today, very pleased with herself.
The moment I collected her from the after school club, Evelyn immediately rushed to me to tell me that she had been 'put on the well done wall' at school. Rushing to her Hello Kitty bag, Evie produced an A4 'well done' certificate awarded for, "trying hard to write independently". Evie was quick to explain that she had been writing without the teacher's help. She was so proud, it was lovely, and she was equally desperate to tell mummy, too. Fantastic!
Evelyn immediately shouted 'NO!' to my suggestion that I laminated the certificate, and put it on her wall...so I plan to scan it for the pages of Gingatopia instead!
Face Painting
Posted by Webby at June 13, 2009 11:55 AM | Comments (0)I turned my back for 10 minutes, this morning (I may have been in the loft trying to find something), when I heard Evelyn announce, as she charged up the stairs,
"I've done my face with facepaints, Daddy, and it is extremely good"
Rushing down the loft ladders, I was terrified that I was going to be confronted by my beautiful girl blathered in Dulux Weathershield Exterior paint (I must remember a similar scene from some crappy ITV sitcom and, if I don't, it's about time one of them used the scene!).

You can't begin to imagine my relief when I discovered that she really had just got hold of the face paints that Jilly bought for her birthday. I think you'll agree, she didn't do too bad a job, really.
Alien Week
Posted by Webby at June 12, 2009 09:55 PM | Comments (0)So...Evelyn's school had an 'alien week'.
Very excitingly (for the children, and for Jilly), the week began with the discovery of the wreck of a crashed spaceship in the school playground. As Jilly walked Evelyn into school on Monday morning, they passed two parked police cars in the school grounds (complete with flashing lights). Beyond the cars were two police officers guarding what looked a lot like the wreckage of a spaceship. The 'wreckage' had been taped off by the police and the police officers were asking the children to 'stay back, stay back' from the 'crash site'.
Jilly and Evelyn passed the police officers as one of them asked a passing teacher if the world had moved for him, last night, during the spaceship's impact. Overhearing this, Jilly had a quiet chuckle to herself. Evelyn picked up on this, and pounced on Jilly,
"Do you think it's funny, Mummy, that a spaceship has crashed in our playground, because it's not! What about those poor aliens? They could be anywhere! Evie was obviously concerned about the extraterrestrial visitors to the school.
At the end of the week the children were invited to attend school, today, in 'space costumes'. It seems as though Evelyn was given a letter on Monday, explaining that she, and all the other children, would be able to attend school in space costume fancy dress on Friday. Unfortunately, Jilly only discovered this letter yesterday, so she had very little notice to create what was brilliant 'space lady' outfit. Thrown together from some excellent silver space material (previously curtains in Kieran's room), Jilly made a space smock, and put it together with a fantastic purple plastic wig (that Evie wore to her birthday party), and other silver and purple accessories. Evelyn looked like she'd just stepped from the set of a 1970's Dr. Who or Blake's Seven episode.

On their walk to school, this morning, Jilly counted another half-a-dozen similarly costumed girls, and at least as many miniature Darth Vaders. Brilliant!
Then, look what I found. Jilly believes this is the actress Gabriella Drake playing a purple haired alien in the 1970s sci-fi series 'UFO'...I knew I'd seen the look before.

Obviously, if I were to be confronted by the pair of them, as I walked through town, I'd be most terrified of the four-foot one!
Ear Piercing
Posted by Webby at June 11, 2009 09:31 PM | Comments (0)Evelyn has decided that she wants her ears pierced. I think one of her friends at school must have had them done this week.
"I would like my ears pierced!" Evelyn exclaimed, quite out-of-the-blue, as we watched TV this evening.
"You can have them pierced", Jilly replied from the kitchen, "When you're 16!"
"When I'm seven?" Evelyn began negotiating, hopefully.
"No! When I'm eight...eleven...NINE!"
Needless-to-say, Evie needs to practice her bargaining skills.
Another First - Evie's First School Trip
Posted by Webby at June 10, 2009 08:22 PM | Comments (0)Evelyn enjoyed another first today; her first organised school trip. Quite literally, Evie has been counting the days down as we have approached today and her trip to Cannon Hall Farm.
As Jilly and I went to bed, last night, Jilly told me of the conversation she had with Evelyn as she put her to bed.
"Daddy had better not be messing around in the morning. We need to get to school for my coach!"
I dropped Evelyn off at school as usual and she immediately made her way to her friends. The conversation, inevitably, was about the trip to the farm and I over heard one of the five-year-olds ask her friends, "This is all very exciting, isn't it?" I could hardly believe what I was hearing; do five-year-olds really speak like that?
When we were all in this evening, Evelyn was quick to assure Jilly and I that she had been a good girl all day, that she had always done as she had been asked by the teachers, and that she had had a lovely time. As she and Molly were in different groups, Evelyn sat next to Niamh on the coach and they were very sensible and chose to take it in turns sitting by the window (we did laugh!). Evie was especially excited to tell us about the baby goat and lamb that she "...feeded..." during her visit to the farm. Apparently, both the lamb and baby goat were very ticklish (I think Evie meant their chins tickled her as they ate from her hand...not that she had spent time tickling them!), but she loved feeding them nevertheless.
Evelyn has gone to bed a very sleepy little bunny tonight.
Back at the Dentist
Posted by Webby at June 4, 2009 07:52 PM | Comments (0)Jilly took Evelyn to the dentists, this afternoon, for a regular check-up. Looking at posters in the dentist's waiting room Evelyn commented,
"Urgh! Look at those teeth Mummy! They're black aren't they?"
"Yes, yes they are!" Jilly replied.
"You've got some black teeth, haven't you Mummy?"
"Yes I have, where I've had my fillings!", Jilly replied with a little embarrassment.
"And you've got some missing, haven't you Mummy?"
Jilly's embarrassment increased, as it became clear that the woman in the waiting room was obviously enjoying Jilly and Evelyn's conversation.
"Yeessss! One or two", Jilly replied, rolling her eyes up to the ceiling.
"And they're wonky, aren't they Mummy?"
"Yes!", Jilly replied as she gratefully looked up to see the dental nurse approach and ask the pair of them in to the dentist.
"Look at my teeth", Evelyn demanded proudly of the dental nurse as she opened her 'flip-top' head, being led through into the dentist. "They're white, and they're all there!"
School Nurse Visit
Posted by Webby at June 2, 2009 07:53 PM | Comments (0)The School Nurse visited Evelyn's school today and measured all the reception children's weight, height and hearing. Evelyn's hearing was described as 'satisfactory'. The childrens' hearing was judged to be either 'satisfactory' or in need of further attention; I've never been so relieved to hear that something about Evelyn was simply 'satisfactory'!)
It's some time since Jilly and I measured Evie's height or weight, and I had been hoping to record the details around her fifth birthday but failed miserably; so I was really pleased to learn that the school and done the job for me. Brilliant!
Evelyn is now 113.5cm tall [in the 83rd percentile of 61-month-old girls], and weighs 23.8kg or 3st 10½lb [putting her in the 95th percentile].
Jilly is a little worried that Evelyn is becoming so heavy, but we both agree that she isn't fat; she just seems very...er...dense!
