Evelyn doin' 'Mummy/Daddy kissin''!

Posted by Webby at April 28, 2009 09:06 PM | Comments (0)

Without any prompting, and quite out of the blue, Evelyn has begun trying to kiss me in a 'mummy/daddy kissin'' stylee.

At the same time, this is both charming and terrifying as, essentially, Evelyn's 'mummy/daddy kissin'' involves a 'normal' kiss, but with her head tilted slightly to the right. Obviously, Jilly and I discourage Evelyn from attempting to kiss me like that, but our efforts are only being rewarded by Evelyn trying harder to do 'mummy/daddy kissin''! Promising not to kiss me like that, Evie has started 'moving in' and then jerking her head to the right at the very last moment. As I object, Evelyn will then promise not to do it again, demand that I close my eyes as she moves in and, exactly as the computer predicted, tries to mummy/daddy kiss me again.

As I said, "...charming and terrifying..."!

Jilly and Evelyn at Sainsbury's Fish Counter

Jilly and Evelyn called in at Sainsbury's this morning, to buy some fresh fish to make their own fish fingers for tea. Evelyn has always shown an interest in the fish at the fishmongers, looking at all the fish for sale.

Evelyn correctly identified trout (calling it 'that rainbow fish'), cod (coddy-eyes), haddock (Jilly always buys haddock) and mussels.

Pointing at the bags of mussels, Evelyn announced,

"They're mussels, aren't they mummy?" which astonished the lady fishmonger.

"Wow!", the fishmonger lady exclaimed, "Aren't you clever!"

So, it seems there may be a career waiting for Evelyn in fresh fish sales...er...or marine biology, perhaps?

I've tried my best to punctuate the dialogue correctly, but fear I have failed misrably! I have experienced several occasions of severe head trauma, dontyaknow!

Trying to find a picture of a fishmongers for Evelyn, I stumbled across the Greenpeace article about the Sainsbury's only selling line caught cod and haddock, and thought it was interesting enough to link to! I hope you agree.

Flookburgh with Jilly and Evelyn

Jilly And EvelynJilly, Evelyn and I shared a lovely weekend at Haven's Flookburgh, near Grange-over-Sands, for the Easter weekend.

Once again, we were very lucky with the weather and Jilly and I even managed to catch the sun (though only incidentally, in my case).

On Saturday morning we drove to the National Trust's Fell Foot Park where Evelyn was encouraged to exhaust herself by taking advantage of the lovely recreation park, and where we all enjoyed an ice cream in the sun. Even though Evelyn was clearly very tired after her charge around Fell Foot, she insisted on going to 'the club', to see 'all the people'. As always, on these occasions, I'm not sure who enjoyed the occasion more as, after a few beers, Jilly joined a host of 'enthusiastic' parents on the dance floor and won a prize for being the best dancing mum (she does have an 'O' level in Modern Educational Dance, don't-ya-know!)

Like the doting parents we are, we made absolutely sure that we packed all the Easter eggs Evelyn had been given, so that she could have an Easter egg hunt around the caravan on Easter Sunday morning.

In an attempt to impress Jilly and Evelyn with my newly acquired (comparitive) fitness, I agreed to our hiring a family 'go-cart', with which we could drive around the site. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that half of the pedals were broken so one of us had to pedal alone! We were refunded the difference of the cost of a single pedal go-cart with which I treated myself to a very well deserved pint of cider...aaarrggggh!

We returned home today, via Skipton, where we stopped for a lovely lunch, excellent pork pie, and where I bought a Jilly a beautiful gold ring for her birthday in October (though I think I'd like her to have it for Evie's birthday).

Evelyn visits Nanna and Poppee

Evelyn has gone to Nanna and Poppee's for a couple of days while her school is closed for the Easter holidays. Jilly and I dropped her off last night after work (when Evelyn was - fortunately - surprisingly happy as we left).

Nanna and Poppee took Evie to Cleethorpes for the day where they enjoyed fish and chips. Actually, Evelyn ate chips and gravy...classy girl, my daughter.

Typically, Jilly and I have been missing Evelyn (she's only been away for 24-hours) so, as Jilly has gone to the cinema with Kempy tonight, I decided it was time to try out the web-cam on my new laptop; and I've discovered the magic which is SKYPE. Ben and I successfully made a Skype connection; and Ben, Jean, Evelyn and I were able to have a discussion with video. Excellent.

You know what they say...little things etc., etc.

Still...brilliant!

Birthday Walking with Jim and Kev - Fairfields Horseshoe

Very generously, Jim organised a weekend at Grasmere (Thorny How) Youth Hostel to celebrate my 40th birthday.

Jim and I drove to Grasmere on Friday morning, arriving in time for lunch at 'The Jumble Room' where I enjoyed what was possibly the best burger I've ever eaten. The Jumble Room is lovely, and would recommend that anyone visiting Grasmere (or Ambleside) ate there at least once. After lunch, Jim and I went on a 'toddler friendly' walk up Loughrigg Crag. The weather was fantastic, and we made or way up and down Loughrigg in a time that surprised even Jim.

A little tired after the walk, Jim and I drove to the youth hostel, where we booked in, before making our way to 'Tweedies Bar' (I'd planned to visit the bar after discovering it in this years CAMRA Pub Guide [a birthday present from the Wassock household]). We had our second excellent meal of the day (though Jim was a little disappointed at the number of chips he was given with his meal!), and tried a few of the real ales on offer.

Kev joined Jim and I, on Saturday morning, as we prepared for our second walk, a leisurely 'potter' around the 'Fairfield Horseshoe'. The walk, planned by Jim (as ever), gave us plenty of exercise at 9.1 miles (or 14.6 km). Again the weather was excellent for walking (in that it was largely overcast during the day), but we did find ourselves walking through cloud as we approached Dove Crag. As we dropped of Stone Arthur, into Grasmere, we found ourselves in 'The Swan Hotel', thanks to more of Jim's inspired planning.

When we got back to the youth hostel I rang Jilly who told me that Evelyn had been really upset throughout the day, as she'd been missing me (I don't get to go away that often, so my absence will have come as something of a shock to the liddle beaudee!). According to Jilly, Evelyn had asked whether or not the buses were still running, as she wanted to catch the bus to collect me and bring me home. I was fillin' up, I was!

So impressed, were Jim and I, by our previous meal at 'The Jumble Room', that we took Kev there for our well deserved meal on Saturday night.
