Quarter Past Frickin' Five
Posted by Webby at October 30, 2006 07:41 AM | Comments (0)A combination of turning the clocks back on Saturday night, and a sound afternoon nap for Evelyn yesterday, has led to a rather unpleasant occurrence this morning...
At 05:15, Evelyn was wide awake and demanding that we all went downstairs to "watch something".
My only hope, as I sit here at my PC at work, is that the terrible feeling of nausea, exhaustion and advancing headache leaves me after the double strength coffee I've made myself. If that doesn't work, I've had the presence of mind to bring my eye mask in the hope that I can sleep through my lunch hour; something that isn’t going to be easy, given that I work at an international airport!
Boo-hoo, sob!
Absolutely word-for-word

They both seemed to be walking a little peculiarly, the reason being that they were each wearing what appeared to be 'moon boots', rubber looking ankle high boots with enormous, possibly 15cm, rubber soles.
Quite astonished [and probably a little jealous(!)], Jilly asked, "What are they walking on?"
From the back of the car, while she played with her toys, Evelyn exclaimed, "The Paff! [Path]".
Absolute comic genius!
And then, this afternoon, Evelyn and Jilly were upstairs, tidying Evelyn's room, when I heard Jilly raise her voice to Evelyn after some obvious and terrible misdemeanor.
"Don't shout at me", pleaded Evelyn, "I'm just a little baby!"
And to think...Jilly complains when Evelyn successfully [and, admittedly, effortlessly!] wraps me around her little finger...I dunno!

Jilly and I joined our liddle beaudee in another excellent [and very successful] first today.
At just two years, five months, and two weeks, we took Evelyn to the cinema today to enjoy her first feature length movie. Evie was almost perfectly well behaved throughout the whole film, only standing up in front of her seat on two or three occasions [and that was, possibly, to get a better view].
Jilly and I agreed that the film was a bit of a slow starter, but Evelyn seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, and was obviously very excited to be seeing a "bid [big] film".
Baby Horses
Posted by Webby at October 13, 2006 08:38 AM | Comments (0)On the way to work this morning, as I was dropping Evelyn off with Nanna, Evelyn saw a beautiful baby horse in a field we passed.
"Aw, Daddy, a baby horse", she said.
I asked Evelyn if she knew what the name for a baby horse was and, after a few seconds thoughtful silence, I told her...it's a foal.
"No, silly Daddy, it's a dontie [donkey]!"
Comic genius!
Sensible girl

Jilly followed Evelyn upstairs to find her in bed with her favourite 'Postman Pat and the Blue Ball'.
"Just read this to me, Mummy," she said, "then I'll go to sleep".
"I've got my arms out, Daddy"
Posted by Webby at October 8, 2006 09:03 PM | Comments (0)As we were approaching Nanna and Poppie's this evening, Evelyn, sat in her car seat behind Jilly, cheerfully announced, "I've got my arms out, Daddy". I looked in my rear-view mirror to see Evelyn sitting forward in her child seat, waving her arms about. She had managed to wriggle her arms out of her safety belt leaving it fastened around her waist. As quickly as I could, I stopped the car, and Jilly immediately got out of the car to chastise Evelyn, and fasten her back into her seat.
Unfortunately, in the mean time, Evelyn had managed to jam the thumb of her left hand up into a hole beneath the headrest of Jilly's seat. As Jilly opened Evelyn's door, Evelyn yanked her finger out of the hole with a sickening 'schlup' sound. I was almost sick as I got out of the car, anticipating what damage Evelyn had done to her thumb, and joined Jilly at Evelyn's side to discover that Evelyn had 'only' split her nail and taken some of the skin of her finger, not the tip of it, as I had anticipated. Jilly, very gently, put a plaster on Evie's thumb and we set off again, finishing our journey, as Evelyn continued to scream her little lungs out.
When we got to Nanna and Poppie's, we immediately cleaned Evie's thumb, having a closer look at the damage, while Evelyn continued to scream, cry, sob and boo inconsolably...and I wanted to join her. Eventually, Evelyn was distracted - by the lovely food that Nanna and Poppy had prepared in belated celebration of Jilly's birthday - for long enough to apply Germolene and a new plaster to her thumb, and ply her with Calpol.
Occasions like this are typical of what most terrifies me about being a parent. Meeting future boyfriends will be a breeze compared to this, I’m sure...
Sister Jillian Webster RN BSc/Dip. Nursing [Practice Nurse]
Posted by Webby at October 4, 2006 10:33 AM | Comments (0)...and, Jilly started her new job today.
Today sees Jilly's first day working as a Practice Nurse [Sister] in a G.P.s surgery. The position is [at the moment] only temporary to cover maternity leave, but it is possible that Jilly's contract may be extended if the current holder of the post decides to extend her maternity leave or, indeed, leave.
I'm only hoping, as I type this, that Jilly is enjoying her first day, and that she will, ultimately, want to continue doing the job.
Time will tell...it usually does!
Jilly's thirty-hurrummppphhhh birthday
Posted by Webby at October 3, 2006 09:34 PM | Comments (0)The day before Jilly is due to start her new job, Gingatopia celebrated the anniversary of Jilly's birth on the 3rd October 1968 [Jilly's asked that I don't announce which birthday she's celebrating, but I'm sure you can do the arithmatic yourself!].
As I was working today, I got Evelyn out of bed to give Mummy her presents. We all sat on our bed, drinking tea as Evelyn and I sang "Happy Birthday [to you]" (voice of an angel, my girl!) to Jilly.
I spent the day at work, while Jilly and Evelyn had a girls day out in Halifax and Eureka, ultimately enjoying coffee [and juice] and cakes in the Piece Hall. According to Jilly, Evelyn was really upset when she had to leave the 'Marks & Spencer' inside Eureka as she was deperate to take her shopping home. Evelyn's favourite exhibit in Eureka was the bicycle riding skeleton...Jilly had to tear Evie from the bicycle when it was time to go!
Jilly received loads of lovely presents, and would like to thank everybody for them...
Inevitable 'falling out of bed' incident
Posted by Webby at October 2, 2006 08:27 PM | Comments (0)Exactly a week - to the day - after we installed Evelyn in her new bed, we've had a 'falling out of bed' incident.
Incredibly, though, it wasn't Evelyn that fell out of her bed...it was me!
The first I remember is, at 01:15 last night, I was falling to my stomach on the fall at the side of our bed. I don't think that I have ever fallen out of bed before, and don't even remember being told by my mum of any falling out of bed incidents as a toddler.
What's that all about then, eh?
Voice of an Angel
Posted by Webby at October 1, 2006 09:39 PM | Comments (0)As Evelyn's speech as come along in 'leaps and bounds', so is her singing. All of a sudden, Evelyn has begun singing along to her favourite rhymes, particularly 'Baa Baa Blackship', 'Miss Polly had a Dolly' and the one about Peter and Paul, the liddle birdies on a wall.
At the same time, Evelyn has begun 'reading' along with me during her bed-time read. When reading 'Postman Pat and the Blue Ball', Evelyn is now about to 'read' from pages of the book as I hold it in front of her. Of course, Evie isn't reading so much as remembering the story; but she remembers it word-for-word [much as Kieran used to do his favourite Mr. Men books]. Fantastic!
